Hubert Thornley (19th century) Hay Barge and Fishing Boats off a Coastline with Figures on a Quayside Nearby Signed, oil on canvas, 26.5cm by 43cm Hubert Thornley was one of the pseudonyms of William Thornley. Lived in Greenwich and had a studio overlooking the Medway near Rochester. According to art historian Denys Brook-Hart, he was actually Charles Thornley and exhibited under this name from an address in Paddington, London. Although called Charles, his best known name was William Thornley. He exhibited and sold paintings under other variations of his name such as Hubert Thornley, William Anson Thornberry and William Anson and variations of Thornbery. See illustration
