Kobell was from a family of Bavarian artists and trained under his father Ferdinand and his uncle Franz. He responded to the 17th Century Dutch landscape tradition as well as the pleasures of painting en plein air. The present work combines these styles along with the cooler colour palette he preferred in the 1790s.
