Horace Mann Livens RBA, British 1862-1936- ''Working by the Thames''; oil on canvas, signed and dated '19, bears hand inscribed labels on the reverse, bears label for Rowley Frames, Kensington Church Street, London and Dicksee & Co., 1917, Bristol, on the frames reverse, in a gilt composition frame, 62x80cm Note: Painter and etcher of quiet interiors, landscapes, townscapes, flowers and poultry. Born 16 December 1862 in Croydon, Surrey, son of a Colonial broker. Began studying under Walter Wallis at Croydon School of Art, while working in his father's office in the City. Worked under Verlat at the AcadÚmie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp, c. 1885, where he met Van Gogh, who afterwards invited him to Paris. There Livens spent some time studying French painting and was influenced by Whistler and Japanese prints. Exhibited at the R.A. 1890-9, N.E.A.C. 1896-1904, Grosvenor Gallery and abroad. First one-man exhibition at the Goupil Gallery 1911. Foundation Associate and from 1907 member of the International Society.
