Condition Report

There are areas of old retouching within the fireplace, to the lower section of the girl's skirt and in places on her hand and arm. There is another area of retouching in the lower left centre of the canvas. These are difficult to read accurately as they have been partially obscured by subsequent varnish layers. Generally the picture is in original condition and would respond very well to cleaning. It is in an impressive 19th century frame which is illustrated in the catalogue. The picture is on canvas and is unlined. It appears very dirty.

Exhibited

London, Royal Academy, 1883, no. 557.
Nottingham, City Museum and Art Gallery (according to an old label adhered to the reverse).

Notes

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
