Description

HOGG, Robert (1818-97) & Henry Graves BULL (1818-85). The Herefordshire Pomona, containing coloured figures and descriptions of the most esteemed kinds of Apples and Pears. Hereford: Jakeman and Carver; London: Journal of Horticultural Office, 1876-1885. 2 volumes in one, 4° (380 x 300mm). 77 chromolithographed plates by Alice Ellis, Edith Bull and W.G. Smith, printed by Severeyns of Brussels, 4 black and white plates, including 2 portraits, text illustrations of cross-sections of fruit. (Margins of plates lightly browned throughout, a few occasional spots, one tissue guard torn, text with light marginal browning and occasional marginal spotting). Green half calf by Harrison, Pall Mall, red lettering-pieces on spine, top edges gilt (spine lightly sunfaded, a few white spots on rear cover, extremities lightly rubbed), original front wrappers for parts I-VII bound in, and titles of parts I-V bound in at end (first wrapper torn in half and parts at extremities torn away). Provenance: Philip Baylis (bookplate and signed on front cover on binding) -- H.C. Dawkins (inscription from his father on the above bookplate).

FIRST EDITION OF "ONE OF THE FINEST FRUIT BOOKS EVER ISSUED" (Great Flower Books, p.59) and "virtually an encyclopaedia of apples and pears" (Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona 82). Nissen BBI 294.
