WITH A PROFILE DRAWING OF A MAN'S HEAD BY PAMELA COLMAN SMITH on the front pastedown, signed with her monogram. BY THE ILLUSTRATOR OF THE FAMOUS RIDER-WAITE-SMITH TAROT DECK. Pamela Coleman Smith remains a somewhat elusive figure. Born in England, and a student of Arthur Wesley Dow at Pratt institute in New York, Smith returned to her native country and joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1903 where she met Arthur Waite. His concept of a modern tarot deck was beautifully executed by Smith. The style of the drawings in these books for juveniles anticipates the famous Waite illustrations. (2)
