Item Overview

Description

Hoang Tich Chu (1912-2003)
PILONNAGE DU RIZ
Signed and dated '68 lower right; signed, titled 'Pilonnage du Riz, Xunhasaba, Hanoi' on a sticker on the reverse
Lacquer on panel
43 by 30 cm.; 17 by 11 3/4 in.
Very interestingly, a very similar subject - but without rifle - and dated '72 is illustrated in Quang Viet, Tranh Son Mai Vietnam (Vietnam's lacquers), Hanoi, 1994, page 24.
The two years - '68 and '72 - are particularly important in contemporary Vietnam's history: 1968 is the year of the Tet offensive and 1972 is the year of the Paris agreement on peace. For the artist, the symbol of the missing rifle is a sign of the forthcoming peace.
