Item Overview

Description

PAINTINGS - MODERN - VEERKAMP, Joost (Dutch 1953). La Plongeuse, 1982. Oil on board, signed and inscribed 'Joost Veerkamp groet G J Hemmink met La Plongeuse 24.9.1982' (lower left), 160 x 98 cm.
Framed. Veerkamp only made very few oil paintings, this one being the cover design for the Dutch translation of the book 'Baby' by Kirsten Thorup published in 1982 (reprinted 19 times!). The painting is based on 'Bathers', a photo of two swimmers by George Hoyningen-Huene from 1930 and on a postcard depicting Manhattan by night. As a young artist, Joost Veerkamp had to design book covers and vignettes instead of making free work. This first book cover design gave us the greatest work of art that Veerkamp has delivered up until now. With a copy of the book and a postcard of the famous photo by Hoyningen-Huene that inspired him. Gert Jan Hemmink introduced him to the world of literature and journalism as his publisher (from his debut 'De rode cabriolet' (1987), his first silkscreen (1979), up until a few other most wanted AMO-editions) and as an intermediary for his most important publications (Gevulde contouren, with Hugo Claus, by Thomas Rap and the first stamps and postcards by Gerard Timmer). He sold his entire Joost Veerkamp collection in 2011 (through Adams) except for this painting that dominated his living room for decades, when not loaned for exhibitions. Finally, in order to support this first NRC auction, he decided to extricate himself from the painting, still recalling the promise he made to the artist in their lean years: "whenever I'll sell this painting, you'll get half of the profit I make"
