Notes

Delicately working within the simplicity of black and white, Hiroyuki Yasutomi creates a rich and complex monochromatic world which captivates all five of the senses. Like a still image from an old silent movie, the cropped composition and gradation in grey beckon the viewer to imagine oneself stumbling upon the intertwined umbrellas on a midnight stroll. In the reflecting water, the two umbrellas appear further aligned than they are, perhaps an innuendo to the departed owners of the umbrellas while the transparent vinyl surfaces paradoxically overlap and melt with one another. We can even hear the falling water creating a drum-like beat as it falls onto the umbrella, while the light reflects off the pooling water towards us. The extraordinary depiction of such varied textures, the sensuousness of a fleeting moment in time, infused with such such depth of emotion and elements of poetic expression, convey both Yasutomi's intellectualism and artistic brilliance.
