Description

Hippolyte Alexandre Julien Moulin (French, 1832-1884) "Secret d'en haut", fourth quarter 19th century, a monumental bronze figure after the 1873 model, depicting the adolescent nude Hermes whispering a secret to a herm of his later self, the herm with antique green patination, the figure of Hermes with dark brown patination, signed in large incised letters on base of satyr "MOULIN", h. 39-1/2", w. 26", d. 12". Note: A cast of this model was displayed at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, London, the "Illustrated Catalog" noting that "The figure of Mercury in 'The Secret From on High' is really a masterpiece of simplicity and grace". The definitive 1875 marble of this model is housed in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.
