Item Overview

Description

Explorations in the Interior of the Labrador Peninsula, the Country of the Montagnais and Nasquapee Indians. London: Longman, Green, et al, 1863.
2 volumes. xv, [1], 351; xiii, [3], 304 pp. 2 maps, one of which is folding, 12 chromolithographed plates, woodcuts in the text after William Hind. 8vo. Original green pebbled cloth, spine gilt. Custom chemise, green morocco-backed slipcase. Front hinge cracked in first volume with first signature sprung, cloth bright with only minor wear.

FIRST EDITION. Hind, a geologist and explorer, was appointed by the Canadian government to conduct a survey of the Labrador Peninsula. Although the expedition was scientifically unproductive, Hind reports on much of interest. "All that Mr. Hind undertakes, is done so thoroughly that little more could be indicated, to complete the exhaustion of his subject. [His] volumes are almost entirely occupied with incidents of Indian life and character, particularly of the Montagnais, Abenakis, and Esquimaux Indians" (Field). The striking chromolithographs are after drawings by Hind's brother Henry, who traveled from England to accompany the expedition. Field 700; Sabin 31933.
Provenance: ownership inscriptions of Charles A. Coolidge and Caroline M. Fitch on endpapers and half-titles respectively.
Acquisition: Laird Park sale, Sotheby's, 2000, lot 159, $1,800.
