Notes

Fascinated by the contradicting forces of weakness and strength, Hideki Satoh uses hair-like lines to represent the confliction between them. A single strand is easily broken yet in rich bundles, it is lustrous and strong. In both Lot 1624 and 1625, we are confronted with a mass of thick interweaving hair that like powerful waves, threaten to engulf the viewer. Delicately rendering single stands with graphite over a bed of thick, black acrylic paint, Hideki Satoh's purposefully uses the flat and smooth surface of the canvas to contrast the textured hair he renders, in essence imbuing the viewer with a sense of unfamiliarity and mixed emotions yet equally captivated by the beautiful movement of the lines.
