the rectangular plaque carved in relief with a mother and child, the child holding a bird, signed bottom right Hermon Cawthra 1948, No.1391.

Hermon Cawthra, was born in London in 1886, he studied at Salts Art School, Shipley (1904-7), Leeds Art School (1907-9), the Royal College of Art (1909-11) and the Royal Academy schools (1912-16). He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the principal galleries in the provinces and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1937. He worked in London and sculpted numerous monuments and memorials in stone and wood as well as bronze, and is best known for his restoration and correction of Turnerelli's bas-relief in the Burns Mausoleum, Dumfries.
