Notes

Fock was a native of Amsterdam, but became one of the leading lights in a Haarlem school of landscape artists which was at its most active around 1800. These artists took their inspiration from their 17th-century predecessors, in particular Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema, and also, like those artists, from the actual landscape in the immediate surroundings of Haarlem. Fock is not known as a painter, but produced some 100 etchings as well as numerous drawings, of which this is one of the finest surviving examples. He subsequently used the drawing as the basis for an etching, in reverse, in which he altered only certain details in the sky (reproduced Amsterdam/Dordrecht 1994-5, p. 126, fig. 60.1).
