Born in Indiana, Herman Wessel studied under Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy. An active muralist, Wessel also taught at the Academy for forty years, and was awarded with various honors throughout his career. Wife and fellow artist, Bessie Hoover Wessel was also active in the Cincinnati art scene at the time.
