Basilisk Bay was named after H.M.S. Basilisk, in which Capt. John Moresby conducted a survey of New Guinea in 1873. In 1885 Nisbet was sent by Cassell & Co. to New Guinea and published The Land of the Hibiscus Blossom: a Yarn of the Papuan Gulf in 1888.
