4to (254 x 196 mm). xii, 602, [2] pp. 27 aquatint engravings, 6 of which are folding, hand-colored engraved folding map. Modern full calf, red morocco gilt-lettered spine label. Brief repair to gutter of title, light offset from plates, somewhat toned.

FIRST EDITION of the work by Scottish-Canadian civil servant Heriot, one of the most notable figures in early Canadian art. Contains attractively-printed views after his original sketches and the final 31 pages contain Father Rasle's vocabulary of the Algonquin language. Field 687; Sabin 31489.
