Item Overview

Description

Herbert Steinke, American, Wisconsin (1894 - 1982), "The Edge of Summer," oil on canvas, signed lower right, several exhibition/gallery labels mounted to the verso, measures 20x 24 inches unframed, offered unframed. CONDITION: Good, a few light edge scuffs. Born in Wausau, Wisconsin, Herbert Steinke graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1923 and earned a BFA in 1925 from the Yale University School of Fine Art, where he studied with Eugene Savage. His close friend and mentor, the artist Carl Werntz (1874 -1944), was the founder and director of the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and first hired Steinke as art instructor. Steinke was a post-impressionist painter whose favorite scenes show farms, lakes and wilderness in the Adirondacks and in the Catskills, near the noted art colony at Woodstock, New York. He lived most of his adult life in Albany, New York, where he spent thirty years as teacher and Director of Art Education for the public school system. During these years he also frequently traveled to Old Lyme, Connecticut, to paint and visit his in-laws, who lived there.
