Herbert Luther Smith (1809-1869) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, STANDING THREE-QUARTER LENGTH BY A BALUSTRADE, IN A BLACK DRESS AND FLORAL SHAWL Signed and dated 1865 l.l., watercolour heightened with white and gum arabic, arched top 52 x 38cm Herbert Luther Smith was the son of Anker Smith, an engraver and miniaturist. He was employed by Queen Victoria to copy state portraits, besides being a successful portrait painter in his own right.
