Youth and Age signed and dated 'HERBERT BUTLER 1889' (lower left) oil on canvas 60 1/8 x 901/2 in. (152.7 x 229.8 cm.) EXHIBITION Probably London, Royal Academy, 1903, no. 308. NOTES Herbert Edward Butler was born in London in 1861 and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. As a young man, he went to Polperro in South Cornwall to paint with a friend of his, Charles Boutwood. They married sisters, two girls from Polperro, and both made the village their home. Apart from a year or two in Chicago, H.E. Butler spent the rest of his life there, and had a small painting school. He had a family of six children. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy at the beginning of the century he turned to smaller water-colours, largely of the harbour and the village of Polperro. We are grateful to Katharine Stockbridge, the granddaughter of the artist, for her help with the preparation of this catalogue entry.
