Lot 140: Herbert E. Butler (fl.1880-1920)

NOTES Herbert Edward Butler was born in London in 1861 and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. As a young man, he went to Polperro in South Cornwall to paint with a friend of his, Charles Boutwood. They married sisters, two girls from Polperro, and both made the village their home. Apart from a year or two in Chicago, H.E. Butler spent the rest of his life there, and had a small painting school. He had a family of six children. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy at the beginning of the century he turned to smaller water-colours, largely of the harbour and the village of Polperro.
