Notes

PROPERTY OF RICHARD DENNIS ESQ
A drawing of a similar bureau bookcase is in the collection of the Westminster City Archive, London. H. W. Batley was described by Lewis F. Day in the Art Journal of 1887 as a pupil of Bruce Talbert's, but Batley's work has a more pronounced Oriental influence. He gathered ten years' work on interior design into his Series of Studies for Domestic Furniture and Decoration, published in 1883. He designed furniture for the cabinetmakers James Shoolbred & Co. and Collinson & Lock.
