Notes

VARIOUS PROPERTIES

Born in 1848, Henry Robertson was the second son of Charles Vandermeulin Robertson, a prominent Liverpool merchant and his wife, the daughter of a well-known Liverpool banking family. His elder brother was Charles Robinson (1844-1891), the landscape and genre painter. He was educated at the Mansion Grammar School where he won a school drawing prize at the tender age of eleven.

In 1877, he married Hamilton Campbell Barclay, the daughter of the Rev. William and Hamilton Barclay, who it is believed were a Gosport family. This may account for his Portsmouth subjects executed as a result of visiting his in-laws. From 1894-1898, Robertson lived in Tonbridge, Kent and then moved eastwards back to Norwich. He spent his last years in Bromley where he died in 1930.

In 1886, Robertson became an Associate Member of The Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers with whom he exhibited on nine occasions. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1888, 1892, and 1894. He also exhibited three hundred works at the Ipswich Fine Art Club (now known as the Ipswich Art Society).

Many of the following works were included in the Henry Robertson A.R.E. 1848-1930 exhibition at the Reading Museum & Art Gallery, Reading, 6th - 27th June, 1987.
