Henry Pember Smith (American, 1854-1907)

The Sea at Dusk
Signed and dated "HENRY P. SMITH 1881" l.r., identified on a presentation plaque,
a label from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, and with labels from P.J. Ulrich's, and Dillon & Sons, both of New York, affixed to the stretchers.
Oil on canvas, 17 x 28 in. (43.2 x 71.1 cm), framed within a liner.
Condition: Retouch, restored tear l.r., surface grime, minor abrasions.

Provenance: Sold to benefit the acquisition fund of the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.

The tear is a 2 inch horizontal tear, and is partially repaired. There are several other fine dots of retouch within the composition. The work has fine scattered (stable) craquelure and might benefit from a cleaning.
