Henry Peach Robinson (1830-1901), 'Wayside Gossip', 1882, from the Gwysaney, North Wales, (Part of the ' Figures in Landscape' series.) Composite Albumen print, laid on board Signed in pencil on margin, 26cm x 36cm. Together with a pipe which we are led to believe by the vendor to have been the property of Robinson and as held by him in his self portrait of 1856. This photograph won a gold medal from the Photographic Society for the best outdoor portrait in 1882. Henry Peach Robinson was born in 1830 in Ludlow, Shropshire, an artist who set up a photography business in Tunbridge Wells in 1868, his studio at 1 Grove Villas, Upper Grosvenor Road, and living with his family in 5 Belvedere Terrace (later named Church Road). In 1869, he commissioned the building of 2, Queens Road, as a permanent residence for his family. He died in 1901 aged seventy, and was buried in Ben Hall Road Cemetery. He carved his own headstone to the design of the lintel over the front door at 2 Queens Road.
