Baerer was born in Hessen-Kassel, Germany and studied with von Launitz at the Munich Academy before moving to America. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, New York from 1866 to 1886 and at the Brooklyn Academy of Art from 1869 to 1872. Public commissions are now in Central Park and Fort Green Park, in New York City.
