Over the past ten years, Danish artist Henrik Plenge Jakobsen has gained a reputation for making works that provoke a double take. His laughing gas chambers, fake traffic accidents and fires, and brightly coloured logos, all play on the seductive powers of surface appearance, as well as the ability to belie underlying meanings and truths. Recent solo shows include Autonomous Acts, Nebelkammer, Vienna (2008); Manhattan Engineering District, FRAC Pays de la Loire, Carquefou (2007); J'Accuse, South London Gallery, London (2005); and Circus Pentium, The National Gallery of Fine Arts, Copenhagen (2005). He has participated in many group exhibitions and projects such as Reality Check, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen (2008); Château de Tokyo, Palais de Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau (2008); Norske Bilder, Oslo Radhus, Oslo (2008); New Economy, Artist Space, New York (2007); The Freak Show, Musee d'Art Contemporain, Lyon (2007); Public Experiment: Colour, Park Nights, Serpentine Gallery, London (2007); and The Real World - Sculpture Now, Beyond and Forever! 21/25, Oslo (2005).
