Item Overview

Description

Henri Vion was born in Paris, France, 1855. He was destined for a decorative painter, and studied with a view to that end. Finding that he did not care to continue that course of study, he sought the advice of his friend, Henti Lefort, who persuaded him to study etching. Being introduced by Lefort, he secured an entrance into Leopold Flatneng's studio, where he remained for a short time. Hoping to secure the Prix de Rome, he entered l'Ecole des Beaux Arts, studying in the studios of Leon Gerome and Henriquel Dupont. He tried repeatedly for the prize, but only succeeded in securing a First Mention. He finally returned to the study of etching under the advice of Lefort. At the Salon of 188j he received a medal for his plate, done in line engraving and etching, of the " Portrait of a Woman " after the painting by Rubens in the Louvre. In 1884 he received a second class medal and was placed Hors Concours. He became teacher of drawing at the "Lycee Tanson," and as such was made Officer of Public Instruction. As an etcher Vion was known for his conscientious work and rare technical skill. His small plate after Meissonier's" The Painting Amateurs," was published in the Hundred Masterpieces. Original etching, circa 1883, titled The Critics of Painting, plate signed, after work by Meissonier, image approx. 8.5 x 7 in. plus margins. VG
