Notes

Meyer drew a number of comparably large and finished bodycolor landscapes throughout his career. One of the earliest, of 1767, is at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (J.W. Niemeijer, Aquarelles hollandaises du XVIIIe siècle, exhib. cat., Paris, Institut Néerlandais and elsewhere, 1990, no. 44). Another, of 1780, was sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 12 November 1996, lot 123, and two more, of 1790 and 1792, were respectively at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 9 November 1999, lot 169 and Sotheby's, New York, 14 January 1992, lot 113. The two latter drawings depict a thatched house very similar to first in this lot.
