Item Overview

Description

HELENA ADELE M. DUNLAP (American, 1876-1955) Hunting Buffalo, circa 1916 Oil on canvas 32 x 26 inches (81.3 x 66.0 cm) Signed lower left. H. Dunlap EXHIBITED: The Los Angeles Modern Art Society, California, 1919. The Los Angeles Modern Art Society was formed in 1916 by local artists seeking to encourage new forms of expression. Its founding members included Helena Dunlap, Bert Cressey, Meta Cressey, Henrietta Shore, Karl Yens, and Edgar Keller. The society's first exhibition was held at the gallery of the Brack Shops in December, where seven hundred people attended the opening. In order to broaden the show's appeal, the august American painter Robert Henri - the Cressey's teacher and a close friend of Dunlap's - was asked to contribute a painting to the exhibition. The show received excellent reviews, and Dunlap's "Hunting Buffalo," was especially singled out for accolades. "Helena Dunlap's Hunting Buffalo is not, despite its title, a canvas of many figures of men and animals, but the portrait of a young Indian. It is a superb bit of painting, strong in character, beautiful in scheme of light and color, broad and free in handling. I have seen nothing from Miss Dunlap's brush that I liked better . . .
