Description

SADAKICHI HARTMANN (1867-1944) Brilliant and controversial critic, writer, poet, artist, playwright, actor and man of letters, Hartmann, of German-Japanese descent was a disciple of Walt Whitman who published widely on Whistler, Stieglitz and others, authoring a classic and definitive textbook on art history in 1900, but after a long career in the arts and publishing he succumbed to drink. A neat S.P., 6 1/4" x 9 1/2" sepia portrait portraying Hartmann in head and shoulders in a semi-comedic grimace, signed boldly across the bottom in fountain pen. Minor spots, one tiny crease in lower right corner, otherwise very good. $100-150
