Notes

PROVENANCE:
Estate of Harry Thubron, where acquired by the present owner

Thubron began his distinguished teaching career in 1950 as head of fine art at the Sunderland College of Art before moving to the Leeds College of Art in 1955. Although he was originally a figurative artist, Thubron moved towards abstraction and his teaching emphasis was on cross-disciplinary practice and experimentation. In a post war period when much art teaching was very traditional, Thubron was an important and respected figure whose pioneering approach influenced an entire generation of artists. Roble is typical of Thubron's work, which was often created using whatever materials were readily available in the artist's studio. There are collections of Thubron's work in the Arts Council, British Council and Tate.
