Notes

"The Cotillion" was inspired by Miss Kathryn Simonds' dance class in Newark, New Jersey, not far from where Walcott kept his summer studio just south of the city. Fifteen young terpsichoreans, all members of the dance class, actually posed for the artist. After its completion, Walcott exhibited the picture in his studio for several months for the benefit of his sitters and neighbors.
