Notes

Born in Stevenage, Herts, Bates first worked as a sculptor of ornament for interior decoration and studied at Lambeth school of art. In 1879 he worked for Dalou whilst he was staying in London and then subsequently travelled to Paris in 1883-1885 where he studied under Dalou and Rodin. He became a student of the Royal Academy Schools in 1888 being elected to his the A.R.A. and won his first medal in 1880. His output includes classical subjects including a set of bas-reliefs after Homer together with busts and statues of his contemporaries including Queen Victoria and Lord Roberts.
