'I had this picture in my room in the Foreign Office together with some by Tunnard. I was visited there once by Mr. G. M. Young, the famous writer on Victorian England, who, after looking hard at theTunnards and making no comment, gazed at this picture and said "I like this picture. I know what it is. A street" (with great emphasis!). I too like it, for its clear colour and directness.' Sir David Scott The present painting depicts part of the market-place in Alnwick, Northumberland. The building with an external stairway is the town hall which looks out over the historic market square.
