Notes

The composition of this large design is unusual, with the Stimmer arms to the right and the figure of Fortuna to the left above a cartouche flanked with putti, dogs and rabbits. It is, however, repeated, though without the inclusion of the specific coat of arms, in a signed and dated drawing of 1597 by Hans Caspar Lang, in the Wyss Collection (fig.1).υ1 Lang has however added the narrative scenes at the top of the composition that are typical of glass designs of the period, but are absent in the present work. Another drawing, by Christoph Murer, dated 1583 and in Schaffhausen, is a further variant of the composition, which probably derives in all three cases from an earlier prototype by Stimmer or one of the artists in his immediate circle. 1. Hasler, loc.cit.
