HANDMANN Jakob-Emanuel (1718-1781), attribué à
Portrait d’Albrecht Fredrich von Erlach, seigneur de Hindelbank (1696-1788), en tenue de colonel du Régiment des Cuirassiers, en 1752.
Huile sur toile, non signée, conservée dans son encadrement d’origine en bois sculpté et doré de style Louis XVI. Porte au dos de nombreuses annotations manuscrites, anciennes, à la pierre noire, par deux mains différentes, précisant les données biographiques et les états de services du modèle, puis, en bas, à droite, « Handmann / pinx. 1752 ».
Usures du temps, accidents, en l’état.
À vue : H. : 112 cm – L. : 78,5 cm.
Cadre : H. : 130 cm – L. : 97,5 cm.

Historique : issu d’une des plus illustres familles patriciennes de Berne, Albrecht Friedrich était le fils de Jérôme d’Erlach (1667-1748), personnalité forte, homme d’État aux qualités exceptionnelles, premier propriétaire foncier bernois de son époque, avoyer de Berne, etc., dont il hérita du titre de comte d’Empire. Il eut une carrière aussi brillante que celle de son père : d’abord dans la carrière des armes, puis dans la politique. Il fut seigneur de Hindelbank, Jegenstorf, Urtenen, Bäriswil et Mattstetten, officier dans le régiment Tillier au service de l’Autriche, capitaine en 1715, puis colonel de cuirassiers. À Berne, membre du Grand Conseil (1727), amman de la maison de ville (1729), bailli de Morges (1735), membre du Petit Conseil (1755), trésorier du Pays romand (1758), plusieurs fois avoyer entre 1759 et 1786. Il fit achever l’hôtel d’Erlach, sans doute le plus prestigieux des hôtels particuliers de Berne, de 1748 à 1752. Il reçut nombre de titres et de distinctions : chambellan de l’empereur Charles VI d’Autriche en 1735, chevalier de l’ordre badois de Saint-Hubert en 1748, grand-croix de l’ordre de l’Aigle rouge en 1773. Décorations dont on peut voir la représentation sur notre portait. Les archives de la Bibliothèque de la Bourgeoisie de Berne gardent les traces photographiques de nombreux portraits d’Albrecht Friedrich, à toutes les étapes de sa vie, depuis son enfance jusqu’à l’apogée de sa carrière. Handmann, le grand portraitiste bernois du XVIIIe siècle, l’a d’ailleurs représenté au moins à deux reprises. Une version quasi identique de notre portrait, considérée comme anonyme, est connue par une photographie en noir et blanc.

In the event a successful bidder fails to pay any amounts due, within one month, the Auction House reserves the right to cancel the sale and re-sell the lot according to the « Folle Enchère » French law (Law of July 10th 2000). The purchaser will be charged for all the expenses caused by the re-auctioning of the property. If the new auction price does not reach the former one, the failing purchaser have to pay the difference.
In any case, the purchaser will be liable for any deficiency, any and all costs, handling charges, late charges, expenses, legal fees, expenses and incidental damages.

Coutau-Bégarie Auction House guarantees the authenticity of attribution of property listed in the catalogue which can be modified by saleroom notices or oral indications given at the time of the sale, recorded in the official sale record.
The correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibitions or historical relevance of any property is a statement of opinion only.
Any illustrations in the catalogue are solely for the guidance of prospective buyers and are not to be relied upon in terms of colour or necessarily to reveal imperfections in any lot.

PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
