Notes

Guy Head settled in Italy in 1787, and from 1788 to 1798 lived in Rome where he became a leading member of the artistic community. In 1782 he was made a member of the Accademia di S. Luca, and as his diploma piece painted Iris, a composition derived from Guido Reni's Fortuna. Several versions of the composition exist, including a larger version shown at the Royal Academy in 1800. The full title at that exhibition was Iris, carrying the water of the River Styx to Olympus for the Gods to swear by - Hesiod's Theogeny.
