Item Overview

Description

Gustave A. Hoffman (American, 1869-1945), "Portrait of Pauline Denison Hoffman", 1903, oil on canvas depicting young brown-haired girl in white blouse, green tartan taffeta jumper, black stockings, and brass-buckled shoes standing in sumptuous domestic interior, with Oriental rug in foreground, vase on sideboard to left, and dark green drapery and Asian bird-decorated folding screen to right, signed "G.A. Hoffman" and dated LL, frame rubbing especially along right margin, minor frame loss, blacklighting reveals possible isolated areas of retouching especially to plaid dress and shoulder bow, cleaned within the last fifteen years by the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT, in tall gilt frame decorated with holly leaves and berries, "E.H. McMickle 30 x 54 R" pencil inscribed along top stretcher verso, not examined out of frame, ss: 53 1/2" h. x 29 1/2" h. [Pauline Denison Hoffman (American, 1894-1927), here depicted around nine years old, was the niece of the artist. Pauline died of tuberculosis after bearing her only child Frances Mary Hart in 1923 with husband Everett Herbert Hart. Family oral history recounts that Hart put away the painting of his deceased first wife after he remarried. The painting was thus stored in a crate in the attic for over seventy years until it was recently discovered by Pauline's daughter and granddaughter. Pauline's daughter, who was four when her mother died, had never before seen this likeness of her deceased mother. Provenance information from consignor included and can be shared with successful buyer.]
