Item Overview

Description

Günther Stüdemann (1890 - 1981) German artist, painter and ceramist. Studemann was trained at the University of Fine Arts in hamburg as a painter from 1911. Stuedemann exhibited his painting at the Free Secession Berlin and later at the Secession in Munich. The Secessions were artistic movements founded in Germany with the intention of exhibiting art that was contradictory to typical standards set by the academy. The movement was considered a part of German Modernism. and was in part thanks to the boom of growth in Berlin at the time, as well as addressing the need for alternative groups within the artistic community. In the 1920s during a study trip to Italy, he first tried his hand at ceramics and soon opened “Vietri Sul Mare” his first workshop. The pottery-museum in Faenza bought quite an amount of his pottery while he was working in vietri sul mare. He worked together with artists like Irene Kowaliska, Richard Dölker, Margarete Tewalt and Liesel Oppeland. The famous I.C.S., (Industria Ceramica Salernitana), was founded in 1927 in collaboration with Stuedemann. I.C.S. employed all the famous artists of the Tedesco period. Today, one can find Studemann's work in museums in Faenza, Munich, Nurnberg, Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Coburg,Kulmbach and certainly in Thurnau, in the pottery museum there, which wouldn't exist without Studemann.
