Titles, part-titles to parts I-XI and XIII, and text in German and French, indices. 554 (of 555) engraved plates, 50 hand-coloured, 8 mounted, one folding. (Variable spotting and browning.) 19th-century straight-grained brown morocco gilt, sides with borders of floral rolls within fillets and other rolls, gilt turn-ins, spines gilt in compartments, lettered in one, numbered in a second and with the imprint at the foot, the other compartments densely gilt with floral and foliate tools, gilt edges. A COMPLETE SET, FIRST EDITIONS OF VOLUMES III AND V, volume I mixed edition, second editions of volumes II and IV. Grohmann was Professor of Philosophy at Leipzig, and the prolific author of various works on architecture and the decorative arts. The plates illustrate a broad range of buildings, landscapes, grottoes and garden furnishings drawn from an eclectic range of sources and styles both western and eastern, classical and rustic.
