Notes

This is a study for the figure of Saint Margaret in Pagani's signed and dated painting of 1592, The Madonna and Child with Saints Margaret, John the Baptist, Nicolas and Francis, now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg (see Christel Thiem, Gregorio Pagani, Stuttgart 1970, p. 48, cat. no G.3, illustrated pl. 2). The painting was commissioned by a friend of the painter Giovanni Berti, and was formerly in the private chapel of the Villa Santa Margherita, in Sciano, Val d' Elsa.
