Description

GRAVES GLADNEY (American 1911- 1976) Gems of Jeopardy, The Shadow pulp cover, September 1, 1941 Oil on canvas 33 x 23 in. Signed lower right Graves Gladney, who painted an estimated 275 pulp covers, is most celebrated by pulp fans for his cover scenes for The Shadow which ran between April 1939 and September 1941. Drafted in late 1941- early 1942, Gladney served in the 82nd Airborne in France. After his tour of duty Gladney returned to his native city of St. Louis, Missouri and accepted a teaching position at Washington University's School of Art where he taught from 1949-1961. "Gems -- jewels -- cut, polished, unset rare and fabulous stones worth ten million dollars. War loot smuggled into America becomes the catalyst for treachery and murder. Only The Shadow can successfully retrieve the gems of jeopardy."
