Item Overview

Description

GRAVES, George (1784-1839). Hortus Medicus, or Figures and Descriptions on the More Important Plants Used in Medicine, or Possessed of Poisonous Qualities. Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black; London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1834.

4o (385 x 222 mm). 44 engraved plates on 38 leaves (29 hand-colored) (some spotting). (First four gatherings loose.) Original cloth-backed printed paper boards (rebacked, some wear and staining). Provenance: D. Darren (signature on front pastedown).

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, originally published in parts from April 1833 to June 1834. The plates are by W. H. Lizars and most are from William Curtis' Flora Londinensis. Graves, who was married to Curtis' niece, purchased the Flora Londinensis plates and copyright from the executors of Curtis' estate, using them for this edition of the Hortus and also publishing a second edition of the Flora Londinensis. Graves was a botanical artist and colorist in his own right and is responsible for the drawing of some plates not taken from Curtis' work, and his name appears on plates numbered 25 through 33 and 38/39. Nissen BBI 747; Stafleu & Cowan 2116.
