Description

4o (265 x 205mm). Including engraved facsimile text plate, THREE ILLUMINATED MINIATURES ON VELLUM each with corresponding etched version, all by John Edwards after the Bedford missal (occasional light spotting). Early 19th-century claret velvet, cream watered-silk doublures and endleaves, gilt edges, purple watered-silk chemise and slipcase, gilt leather lettering piece on slipcase (extremities of slipcase and chemise a little discoloured and frayed). Provenance: Library of William Foyle, sale these rooms 11 July 2000, lot 94. A FINE, ATTRACTIVE AND RARE COPY of the most comprehensive description of the Bedford Hours to date. The rich and detailed illuminations by John Edwards (d.1793) were copied directly from the Missal, which his brother James Edwards, the Pall Mall bookseller, acquired at the Duchess of Portland's sale in 1786.
