Description

GOTTHEIL, Julius (1810-1868), artist. Mecklenburgisches Album. Hamburg: W.L. Anthes for B.S. Berendsohn, 1855-1856-1867. Oblong 4° (242 x 330mm). 2pp. list of subscribers. Chromolithographic title, 60 steel-engraved plates. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary half calf, 3 (of 20) original yellow letterpress part wrappers bound in at front (extremities rubbed, head of spine defective, rear wrapper of 1867 part creased and soiled). Provenance: Mecklenburgische Ritter und Landschaft Bibliothek (stamp to verso of title).

FIRST EDITION of this comprehensive collection of views of Mecklenburg, north-eastern Germany. The wrappers present in this copy are for the 'Erste Lieferung', dated 1855, the 'Achzehnte Lieferung' dated 1856 (front wrapper only) and an unnumbered part dated 1867. The rear wrapper to the first part states that the work was intended to be published in 20 monthly parts, each with 3 plates. The presence of the 1867 wrapper suggests this copy was completed later, with the rear wrapper indicating a change of publishing strategy, declaring that it is being published in 15 monthly parts, each with 4 plates. Two issues are advertised, available either on china paper, or the standard 'milchweisses Kupferdruckpapier'; the present work is the latter. An East German reprint appeared in 1986.
