GORDON'S WOODEN CHINESE SEAL, carved with two Chinese characters Ge Deng, 'Advancing Spear', the epithet applied to Gordon in China, which in the Chinese is phonetically similar to the name Gordon, inscribed 'Gordon' on the back in a nineteenth-century hand, 3¼ inches (8.2 cm) high, [c. 1863]

A photograph with description of this seal was published by David Sanctuary Howard in A Tale of Three Cities: Canton, Shanghai and Hong Kong, Three Centuries of Sino-British Trade in the Decorative Arts, 1997, no. 314, p. 230.

Gordon was present at the looting of the Summer Palace in 1860 and was commander of the Chinese 'Ever Lasting Army' against the Taipings in 1863.
