GOLDICUTT, John (1793-1842). Specimens of Ancient Decorations from Pompeii. London: Rodwell and Martin, 1825 [on paper watermarked J. Whatman, 1824 and 1825]. 8° (275 x 190mm). Hand-coloured engraved title with vignette by Edward Finden after Goldicutt, 2p. letterpress, 19 partly-numbered, hand-coloured engravings after the author and Ambrose Poynter. (Some thumb-soiling, plate 6 with internal tear in blank area, most plates loose.) Contemporary pink cloth (inner hinges split). Provenance: some pencil annotations in an old hand. Goldicutt, who had visited Pompeii in 1816-17, selected these designs "with a view to assist the Artist in the interior decoration of houses". Two of the plates are after designs by Poynter. Hamburg: Friedrich Perthes, 1839. 8° (260 x 212mm). 12 chromolithographic plates of the catacombs after C. Götzloff and C.G. Neapel, 3 folding lithographic plans by and after A. Autran. (Title spotted.) Contemporary russia gilt, marbled endpapers and edges (upper cover slightly bowed). Bellerman's work on the catacombs of Naples was based on a visit made in 1828 and 1829 with two friends, the painter Carl Götzloff and the architect Amy Autran. Lipperheide Be33. (2)
