Born in Toyama Prefecture, Gokura Senjin graduated from the Japanese-style painting (nihonga) department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1915. The following year he traveled to America. After 1945 he taught painting at the Tama University of Arts in Tokyo. He also served as a juror for the Japan Art Institute. His paintings are included in the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
