Notes

Although drawings by Maes are by no means rare, this seems to be his only surviving ceiling design. Indeed, just two other designs for decorative paintings are currently known: the Death of Achilles, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. 153υ+ - 1941) and a design for an overdoor of Minerva flanked by the four Cardinal Virtues, in the Leiden University print room (inv. 658).
