Item Overview

Description

LA BELLA

101x87cm.; 39 3/4 x34 1/4 in.

signed; stamped with a seal on the reverse

oil on canvas

NOTE

This painting is a copy of La Bella by Palma Vecchio, painted in 1525 and which hangs in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

The seal on the reverse displays a coat of arms, thought to be Roman and probably belonging to a member of the d'Andrea family who were Neopolitan in origin. In 1707 the family became knights of Malta, explaing the inclusion of a Maltese cross on the seal. Additional emblems suggest a further allience with both the Barberini and Colonna families.
